A common ingredient in cocktail recipes is Sweet and Sour mix. This mix can be purchased in large jugs at the store; however, it is surprisingly easy to make your own homemade sweet and sour mix.
In less than a half hour, you could have your own homemade cocktail mixer which would be perfect for a party or just to have on hand for your own cocktail. I love having a jar in the fridge that I can use whenever we decide to make some cocktails for friends.
Homemade Sweet & Sour Mix
With spring and summer getting closer Sweet and Sour Mix is going to be an integral part to those cocktails. It creates a nice base for these cocktails because it has a strong flavor, yet blends well into the other flavors of the cocktail. By creating it yourself, you actually taste the lemon, and not the fake lemon flavor.
Homemade Sweet and Sour Mix is one of the main ingredients in one of my favorite cocktails – a Long Island Ice Tea! It is also great for lemon drops, margaritas, or adding a bit of lemon flavor to other cocktails.
This mix recipe will last a couple of weeks in the fridge, but since it is so easy to make; you could simply make a fresh batch before any BBQ or dinner party where you are mixing up some cocktails.
What is your favorite cocktail? How will you use this homemade sweet & sour mix?
How to Make Sweet and Sour Mix
- 2 cups Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
- 2 cups Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice
- 3 cups water
- 3 cups sugar
- In a medium sauce pan, stir together the sugar and water
- Continue to stir over medium heat until it is thoroughly combined and thickens into a syrup
- Stir the lemon and lime juice into the syrup.
- Store in an airtight container (I used a few mason jars) in the fridge.

Thank you so much for this! One of my favourite drinks is the Southern Comfort Hurricane, and it calls for Sweet and Sour mix- which isn’t readily available in Canada. I’ll have to try this out soon.

What heat do you use (medium/medium-high) to dissolve the sugar and water?
