One of my favorite projects to make for baby gifts are snuggle blankets. These are easily made out of fat quarters or fabric remnants. With so many upcoming babies coming to my friends I’m going to be busy making a bunch of these.
Fat Quarter Snuggle Blanket
I create these snuggle blankets out of two types of material – flannel and minky. One of the most important things to do before starting the project is to wash the fabric to make sure that all the shrinking happens before you start sewing it together.
I like to use all free clear for this fabric pre-wash because it is 100% hypoallergenic and even received the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance! Since these blankets are for babies, I want to make sure that the fabric doesn’t irritate their skin. These mighty pacs are super easy to use, just toss one in with the fabric!
These snuggle blankets can be made in just a few minutes, and steps. They are perfect for beginner sewers as well because everything is a nice, straight edge.
Fist, iron out all the wrinkles of the flannel. Do not iron the minky or you will mess up the fabric. All those fun dots disappear if ironed.
Second, cut the two pieces to fabric to the same size ans pin the fabric right sides together. Pin every couple inches because both minky and flannel will stretch a bit as you sew and the pins will help keep it together properly.
Sew around the edges of the blanket with 3/8″ seam leaving about a 3″ opening. Trim the corners and flip inside out.
The final step is to top stitch around the entire blanket, making sure to seal up the opening.
And you’re done! (Ignore the fact that the fabric changes part way through, I was making multiple blankets) The longest part of this process is the pinning which can get a bit tedious but is very important.
One thing that makes these blankets perfect is that they are small enough for the babies or toddlers to carry them around by themselves. Both the flannel and minky are soft, and perfect for cuddling.\

This is such a great project! I’m always finding great fat quarter patterns in the craft store and having nothing to do with them. Now with a new baby niece coming this summer, I might have to make her one of these blankets!

I can’t sew worth a lick myself, lol! But what a great tip to wash the fabric BEFORE sewing! I never would have thought of that! :)

I always have such high hopes to be crafty with thing like this – – you make it look so much easier than I have a feeling it would be for me to do! lol I get so frustrated and lose patience quickly.

I am SO bad about washing fabric before I sew. I really need to just start washing my fabric when I bring it home, before I ever put it away.
Super cute project! I love handmade gifts :-)

Such a cute and fun gift idea! I tried a larger-sized one of these when I first started sewing using a different tutorial and at the time it seemed way more complicated than this does and I really wasn’t happy with how it turned out. You have inspired me to return to this project now that I am more confident with my skills – just because it’s adorable!

Could you possibly use cotton instead of flannel? I have gorgeous fat quarter squares and am in live with this idea.
