And they’re off! Are you going to be watching the Kentucky Derby this weekend? Whether you are rooting on the underdog from the stands or your comfy couch, a Mint Julep is the perfect cocktail to enjoy for the most exciting two minutes in sports.
A Twist on the Classic Mint Julep – A Cocktail Recipe
- 1.25 ounces Bulleit Bourbon 10 Year Old
- 1.5 teaspoon sugar
- Fresh Mint Leaves
- Water
- 2 ounces Strawberry Infused Water
- In a rocks glass, muddle mint, sugar, and a splash of water
- Pour in Bourbon and Strawberry Infused Water
- Fill with Ice, garnish with mint & enjoy
The twist to this recipe is the strawberry infused water. I let fresh strawberries sit in some water for a couple of hours before making this cocktail which added another flavor profile to a delicious cocktail.
The Bulleit 10 Year Old makes a great Mint Julep or can also be enjoyed by itself. The classic Mint Julep is made using crushed ice and enjoyed over an extended period of time as the ice melts. Since I didn’t have crushed ice, I decided to add my own twist with the strawberry infusion.
The Blade & Bow 22 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is going to be re-released to coincide with the derby this year. It was originally launched on Derby Day in 2015 and is to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Kentucky. This makes for a luxurious Mint Julep or can be simply sipped throughout the evening.
This cocktail is the perfect way to enjoy Derby weekend (also if you are celebrating, make sure to send me a photo of your Derby hat!).
