I’m trying to capture a wide group of people in my A DIY Christmas series (I do have ideas for kids and Men coming up later in the series). Today’s idea could work for anybbody who wears makeup. What goes on must come off so why not do it gently?
DIY Makeup Remover Solution & Pads
I’ve posted about both of these items before separately but by putting them together they could be a great little gift for teens through adults. You could even add a giftcard to Sephora if you wanted to make it a little bigger of a gift.
The makeup remover pads are simply terry cloth and minky sewn together to create little squares. I did a tutorial back in March which can be found here. They can also be purchased in my Etsy shop (I can do other colors as well). One of the great things about them is that they require such little fabric they can easily be made from remnants or a small cut of fabric. If you have multiple people to gift these to, why not buy a few different colors and give a fun selection (and make some for yourself as well).
I originally made my own eye makeup remover back in the spring of 2012 and have been making it ever since. This uses simple ingredients that are inexpensive plus each batch lasts me a few months!
Here are the ingredients:
- 1 cup water
- 1 1/2 Tablespoon baby shampoo
- 1/8 teaspoon baby oil
- 15 drops tea tree oil
Once the solution has been made, simply pour into some bottles and label! Labeling could be as simple as a hang tag or a sticker.

Sounds great! How do you wash these?
Kendra says
To wash mine, I put them in a bra laundry bag and throw the in the washer with everything else. Thanks!

Those pads are so cute! I just have a question….if you are removing mascara will the tea tree oil burn your eyes?
Kendra says
The oil is so diluted in the solution that I haven’t had an issue.

I have some tea tree and lavender essential oil that I have been looking for a use for! Do you think I could use for the tea tree oil in the recipe?
Kendra says
I definitely think that you could use either the tea tree or the lavender for this.

What does the tea tree oil do? Does it just make it smell nice, or does it have a helping hand in removing makeup? I have everything except for the dang tea tree oil. :-)
Kendra says
You could make it without the tea tree and it would work just fine.
Maddy says
Awesome, Thank you!

How long of a shelf life does this have?
Kendra says
I generally use a bottle in about 3 months and haven’t had it go bad. I imagine it would be pretty long since each of the ingredients have long shelf lives and they are being mixed together without transforming them (such as heating or cooling).
