We moved our pets’ water dish to the kitchen a few years ago. This is convenient for refilling (especially since Pico is like the kid in Signs who always has to have new water, even if it was filled 5 minutes earlier); however, there are problems having it in the kitchen because it will accidentally get kicked every once in a while. In the past, we had set the water dish on top of a kitchen towel to soak up any water that may spill; but when we had our unexpected kitchen remodel earlier this year, I wanted to make one that went better with the new decor. So I made my own.

DIY Waterproof Pet Water Dish Mat

This mat is so easy to make! It only takes a couple pieces of fabric and less than 30 minutes. The key to making this waterproof is to use PUL fabric. this is the same type of fabric that is used in cloth diapers, wet bags, and reusable sandwich bags. One side has a solid color (or fun design) and the back is coated with a plastic type material to make it waterproof.

The top of this mat is a simple cotton in a grey and white trellis pattern. I used some green/red/blue plaid PUL fabric because I had a remnant left over from a previous project that was the perfect size for this mat. The PUL doesn’t 100% go with my new kitchen color scheme; but that is OK since it is the backside.

To make this mat; I cut each piece of fabric in an 18″ square and then pinned them right sides together. Sew around the edges, leaving approximately 3″ opening. Clip the corners and flip the fabric right-side out. Sew along the edge again, making sure to close the opening. See, it really is super easy to make!

I love how this turned out. It looks a lot more stylish than the dish towel and still serves the same purpose. Plus, when it starts to get dirty, I can simply throw it in the washer (with 4 furry animals, it has collected a bit of fur over time). How do you protect your floors from the pet water dish?
