The women we meet all have huge dreams to change their world. Ruth, Edith, and Milycah aspire to improve their lives while utilizing the internet to achieve their dreams. These women were part of a group who were helping us by providing feedback on Intel’s new digital learning platform – She Will Connect, My Digital Journey. Follow along below to learn more about their aspirations and the My Digital Journey learning platform.
This learning platform is a break-through way to teach digital literacy. It involves a game-like setting and includes quests, missions and challenges. These are all set up with a dialog with characters who guide them through learning concepts of digital citizenship and online safety. With the game-like aspect, the students are engaged in the stories of the program characters and developing their own character to the highest level. This platform will become a place for girls and women to learn how to engage safely online and know how to access any information they need to achieve their dreams.
One of the major issues facing Kenyan citizens is the lack of available jobs. The women that we have met realize that in order to change their lives, they need to stand out among job applicants and one way to do this is with computer skills.
Ruth plans on being a chef and loves to bake. While chatting about ways that she could use the internet to grow her catering business, Edith suggested that she start a website showing off the different items that she makes and for advertisement. It was great watching the young women provide ideas to each other about how to grow their goals and dreams to fruition using the internet.
For Edith to reach her goals, she definitely needs as much internet access as possible. A few months ago, she learned about Upwork (formerly Elance) where she can complete freelance jobs online. In order to receive the higher paying jobs, her profile needs to have a higher score (which shows digital proficiency). My Digital Journey will help her grow these skills and help her protect her digital identity.
Milycah has career aspirations of being a local journalist. For this to happen, she sees how important proper technology and internet connectivity will be. With so much of today’s news being broke online, it will be even more important to be connected at all times and know how to conduct herself as a professional online.
We had such an awesome group at Hawkers Market Girls Center. I can’t wait to see what sort of amazing things each of them does.
This group of girls hold the power to change the future of Kenya and become ambassadors for digital proficiency and the Intel® She Will Connect – My Digital Journey platform.
