For the past couple years I have said that I wanted a Roomba. Every time I’ve said this, Brad laughed and said that it wouldn’t work because I had too much stuff on the floor. I was a bit surprised when I opened up my Roomba for Christmas! I wanted to use it for a while before reviewing it and I have definitely been impressed.
Roomba Review
Brad purchased the Roomba 650 Pet Edition for me, with 4 furry friends in the house we get a lot of hair floating around the floors. We installed laminate flooring a few years ago and ever since then the hair has been really noticeable. It would just float around the floor mocking me every time we went to vacuum. The Roomba has been able to capture the fur so that it no longer can mock me.
The Roomba is round; however it has a sweeper arm which allows it to brush debris from the edges and corners into it’s path. I have noticed that it picks up larger pieces of dirt best if it has a direct path over it so this sweeper arm is a necessity.
One of the cool features of the 650 is that it can be scheduled to run on its own. I haven’t set that up yet; it is easy to go over and press the “clean” button then walk away. Our downstairs is somewhat separated into three rooms. A family room, living room and kitchen. Sometimes we only want one of the rooms cleaned so we set up the virtual wall so that the Roomba will stay in that room or out of a specific room. There is also a “go home” button so if it isn’t finished cleaning but I don’t want it running around anymore I can tell it to go dock itself.
We did notice that the Roomba had some issues with cords. A couple times it got stuck behind the Christmas tree and I was worried that it was going to suck up the cords. This issue was solved with the virtual wall set up to avoid the Christmas tree.
For the first week or two, Pip had major issues with the Roomba and would bark at it the entire time it ran. Once he realized that first it wasn’t going to hurt him and second it wasn’t going to play with him, he gave up and now just ignores it.
I have been impressed with how well it picks up and how much it can find even running it two days in a row. It can be a bit loud to run it in the evenings while I watch TV; the schedule feature solves this problem because it can run it while I am at work (that is, once I get it set up).
Do you have a Roomba? What is your favorite feature?

I have been wondering about these Roombas, now if I could just talk my husband into one!

I was just about to ask you about the sound…but then you answered my question. :) We have tile floors in all the main areas except the bedrooms. I’ve been curious about the Roomba for a long time! Thanks for sharing!

I imagine tile would be about the same noise as the laminate. It’s still quieter than a normal vacuum but not something I want on while watching TV.
