As an engineer I’m always excited to see STEM toys come out for kids of all ages. The Fisher Price Code-A-Pillar is a pretty awesome and perfect for one of my favorite pre-schoolers, Aubree.
The Code-A-Pillar features a driving head and multiple body segments that determine the path that the Code-A-Pillar will take. It also features two targets in order to work on problem solving skills to figure out how to make the Code-A-Pillar go from point A to point B. Brad and I headed over to Aubree’s house to see what she thought of this toy. She knew that we were coming over with a toy and greeted us at the door with a huge smile and patiently waited for Brad to open the package.
Once the toy was open, Aubree immediately started playing with it and easily figured out how to plug the pieces into each other.
After a few minutes, Aubree and her dad were making up challenges to see what sort of path they could make the Code-A-Pillar take. I’m sure in a few days she’ll be able to figure out how to make the Code-A-Pillar from point A to point B (once she figures out how far each body segment will travel).
In addition to reinforcing ideas such as Left & Right, the Code-A-Pillar also instills the ideas of algorithms (and with the expansion pack, a “For loop”).
I definitely recommend the Code-A-Pillar to any preschooler, I think they will definitely enjoy the toy, without realizing how much they are learning.
Make sure to pick up your own Code-A-Pillar at Best Buy!
