My mom just retired from teaching after I don’t remember how many years (it was a lot). When I got married, my mom gave me her play-dough recipe at one of my showers. It is super easy to make and a single batch could be made into a rainbow of colors.
Teacher Approved Play-Dough Recipe
- 2.5 cups Flour
- 0.5 cup salt
- 1 Tablespoon Alum
- 2 cups water
- 3 Tablespoons Baby Oil
- Food Coloring
- Essential Oils for Scents (optional)
- In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients.
- Boil the water and then stir it along with the baby oil into the dry mixture.
- If you want to make a single color, put in a few drops of food coloring then knead it into the dough. If you want to make it into multiple colors, knead the mixture then separate it into balls and then knead the food coloring into each ball.
Once all the colors are mixed in the dough will still be warm; however, it is important to let it cool in an air tight container because it will dry out like normal play-doh.
I ran out of normal white flour while making this batch so I had to use some whole wheat flour which is giving my play-dough a bit more of a muted color. I was trying to make a bright purple but instead ended up a bit more mauve.
I also wanted to add a bit of scent to my play-dough so I put in a few drops of lavender essential oil to give it a nice scent.
This play-dough makes great gifts; the plastic Ball freezer containers would be perfect for storing this play-dough and also for wrapping it up for gift giving.
Do you know somebody who would enjoy some play-dough for Christmas or another gift-giving occasion? What colors and scents would you make?

Thanks for sharing! Every time I go to the store I reach for playdough but then I think no I can make my own. Now that I have this bookmarked I can make some for my kiddos.
