I remember when I was a kid we were out camping and introduced to a meal that was referred to as “Tonka Cookers”. I’ve seen learned that they go by many names such as Pie Iron and Camp Cookers as well. These are always a favorite dinner of ours to make around the camp fire each summer. This past weekend, Brad and I headed over to the neighbors for an evening hanging out around the fire (and enjoying some delicious Tonka Cooker pizzas and desserts.
One of the great things about these pizzas is that they are personal sized so everybody can create their own little pocket of deliciousness. I go for the Hawaiian pizza with Canadian Bacon and pineapple. Brad likes to make sure his has lots of different meat options – Canadian Bacon, pepperoni, sausage, and whatever else he can find.
- White bread
- Pizza Sauce
- Cheese (I used sliced and it worked slightly better than shredded)
- Sliced Meat - Canadian Bacon, Pepperoni
- Crushed Pineapple
- Any other favorite Pizza Toppings
- Cooking Spray
- Spray the Pie Iron with cooking spray
- Place a slice of bread on each side of the iron
- Fill with desired toppings
- Close and place in hot coals
- Cook for 5-10 minutes, or until nicely toasted on both sides.
- Enjoy!
Make sure you save room for dessert! The steps are the same, but instead of using savory pizza ingredients, fill with tasty pie filling.
In addition to pie fillings, there are all sorts of other ingredients that would be delicious, such as nut butters, Nutella, or chocolate. If you want to take advantage of all the amazing fresh summer fruits right now, you can easily make your own pie filling as well.
When it comes to cooking on the campfire, getting the hot coals as fast as possible is always important. The HomeRight ElectroLight Fire Starter is a great solution to get dinner cooking quickly.
The ElectroLight Fire Starter pumps out air at 1300 degrees (while the safety button is being compressed). In just a couple minutes it starts the fire and then continually blows hot air to get the fire really going. Our summers are always full of evenings around the campfire with our neighbors so the ElectroLight Fire Starter has gotten quite a bit of use already.
Our ElectroLight Fire Starter is going to get even more use this summer as we experiment with various flavor combinations for our Pie Iron dinners and desserts. What would you put on your pizza or dessert pie?

This is such a cool way to make pizzas outdoors! We’re big on grilling our pies, but I love this handheld pizza pocket version! Definitely going to have to try this around our fire pit one night!
