Can you believe that summer is almost over? It seems like it was just yesterday that summer was starting, but now the sun is setting earlier each day and Seattle can’t quite decide if it wants to cool off for fall or keep summer temperatures going for a few more weeks.
Brad’s birthday is right around Labor Day so we will be hosting a BBQ this weekend to celebrate him. Of course, we will be having the traditional BBQ fare; but I want to do something a little special for dessert. I decided to put together a fun Ice Cream Sundae bar which features some flavors of late summer.
I started off this Ice Cream Sundae bar with some delicious grilled fruit. Peaches and Pears are the perfect end of summer fruit and I thought that they would serve as the perfect base for each sundae. Grilling these fruits are super simple. Cut in half, remove the pit or seeds, then place on the grill for about 5 minutes or until the fruit has softened.
One key aspect of an Ice Cream Sundae bar is to have multiple options. Since Brad can’t have dairy, I had some coconut milk ice cream and homemade sorbet as well (we use an ice cream maker similar to this one). Use the grilled fruit as the base of the sundae and then add the frozen treat of choice into the bowl. How cute would these bowls be for an ice cream sundae bar?
I like to have lots of topping options as well. Sprinkles, marshmallows, sauces, nuts, and of course whipped cream and a maraschino cherry to top it off! When thinking about what toppings to have, I thought through what sort of things I put on my frozen yogurt whenever we go get that (I always say that my froyo looks like a 5 year old’s bowl). I really wish I could have found the little mochi balls; I’ll have to keep looking for it before Brad’s birthday BBQ.
- Ice Cream in Multiple Flavors
- Peaches/Pears
- Marshmallows
- Sprinkles
- Chopped Nuts

These Ice Cream Sundaes are absolutely delicious and perfect for parties as each person can customize it to their preferences. We will definitely be enjoying some more ice cream sundaes this weekend as we have one final summer BBQ with friends.
