Today’s craft is a fun and unique way to count the days down to Christmas. It is a great rustic ornament to hang on your tree, and also a fun way for kids to get involved in the countdown.
Days ‘Til Christmas Countdown Ornament
Materials:
- Wood Slice
- Fine Grit Sandpaper
- Chalkboard Paint
- Foam Brush
- Screw Eye
- Twine
- Red Adhesive Vinyl
- Silhouette Cameo
- Transfer Tape
- Chalk
The first step is to sand down the front and back of the wood slice. A lot of times they will come somewhat sanded, but you want as smooth of a surface as possible (hence the fine grit sand paper). Once it is nice and smooth, use a foam brush to paint the front with chalkboard paint. Mine took 2-3 coats to give a nice solid coat of chalkboard paint.
Measure the diameter of your chalkboard circle and then use that as a base in Silhouette Studio for the area that you have to work with for “Days ’til Christmas”.
Create two text boxes, one with “days ’til” and another with “Christmas”. Draw a circle slightly smaller than your ornament diameter then make the text form to the circle shape. Make sure that the text goes on the inside of this ornament instead of the outside.
Once it has been cut, use transfer tape to apply the decal to the ornament. Add the screw eye to the top of the ornament (if the wood is too hard, you might need to use a drill to pre-drill the hole) then add some twine to hang the ornament.
This ornament is great for kids to update each day as it is something fun to do each day, and isn’t fragile so it should stand up to their abuse over the years.
These ornaments also make great gifts, simply pair with some chalk and give ornament to friends with young kids.

So, so brilliant! I bought a stupid/tacky felt advent for my daughter but this one is SO MUCH BETTER. Off to make it and “lose” the felt one.
