In a couple months, there is going to be a once in a lifetime event just a couple hundred miles away from us – a Total Solar Eclipse. This event is extra unique in the fact that it is actually going to be visible across the entire continental United States.
While thinking about what sort of things I could do to commemorate this event, I decided to come up with this delicious Total Solar Eclipse Drink. Even if you aren’t near the path of totality, all of the continental US will see at least a 50% eclipse so everybody can celebrate!
Update: This post was originally written for the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse. While the path is different for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, this cocktail recipe is still delicious and the perfect way to enjoy the event.
Total Solar Eclipse Drink
- 4 ounces Sparkling Clementine or Orange Pop
- 1.5 ounces Dark Rum
- Orange Slice for Garnish
- Pour Sparkling Clementine or Orange Pop over Ice in a cocktail glass
- Gently pour dark rum on top
- Garnish with an orange slice
The total solar eclipse happens here on the west coast approximately 10:15am so it will be a little early to enjoy it during the eclipse; however, it would be a fun way to kick off the party the night before. For those of you on the east coast, it is more mid afternoon so you could definitely enjoy this while waiting for totality.
The dark rum floater casts the perfect dark shadow across the bright orange sparkling beverage. Plus the flavors of the rum blend nicely into the sweet orange soda.
I’m having such a fun time planning for our total solar eclipse adventure. If you are going to be watching from any place in the continental US, make sure to check out this post on some items to pick up from Amazon for safe viewing. Where are you going to watch the total solar eclipse?

In my mind, this is being served at a “Mad Men”-esque super chic solar eclipse party. OBVIOUSLY, the life in my mind is way better than my real life.

Love this cocktail! I was looking for ‘Eclipse drinks’ and this was one that came up. I wanted something simple and this has only 2 ingredients plus the orange slice. I bought the orange soda pop and a black rum, and the two make for a delicious drink! Will definitely be keeping this on file for the total eclipse we’ll be having in Texas in 2024!
