Are you excited for Star Wars – The Last Jedi to come out next month? I’m looking forward to heading to the theater to watch it, so in anticipation, I created some fun cocktails to enjoy.
Glowing Lightsaber Cocktails
These are actually pretty basic cocktails. There are certain food that will naturally glow under blacklight so these are utilized to make these glowing lightsaber cocktails. The one on the right is *supposed* to be red; however, this was actually harder to make than I thought and my cocktail didn’t have a nice bright glow like the blue one.
For the lightsabers, I used these test tubes with screw caps. They each hold 3 ounces which is a great cocktail size.
The Blue Lightsaber is simply a Gin & Tonic with a 1:1 ratio – 1.5 ounces Gin, 1.5 ounces Tonic. The Tonic water gives this cocktail a pretty awesome fluorescent blue color.
Chlorophyll gives plants like spinach its nice green color; however, under black light it actually glows a deep blood red color. For the red light saber, I combined 1.5 ounces vodka, 1 ounce cranberry juice, and 0.5 ounces spinach juice. The cranberry juice is a strong enough flavor that the spinach juice somewhat hides in the flavor profile. I didn’t have any spinach juice in the fridge; however, I had some spinach and a Vitamix so I made my own.
In my Vitamix, I combined a couple handfuls of spinach and about 2 ounces of water. I blended it on low-medium until I had a good spinach liquid. I then strained it through some cheesecloth because I only wanted the juice and not all the fiber of the plant. I probably could have pulled out my juicer too; however, that thing is a PITA to clean so I stuck with the Vitamix. (Or even easier, pick up some Spinach juice at the store).
I wish I could have gotten the same bright blue of the other lightsaber so I might do some further experimenting to see what I can do.
So now you too can pick the light side or the dark side in your cocktail choice. Which cocktail will you pick?
